James H. States, MD - Director
Dr. James States is the founder and director of the first private sector, multidisciplinary Adolescent Medicine Clinic in the Pacific Northwest. He completed a Postgraduate Fellowship in Adolescent Medicine at Children's Hospital at the University of Southern California. He is dual certified by the American Board of Family Medicine in Family Medicine and Adolescent Medicine. He has been an innovator at the clinic level, in mobile health, e-medicine, e-prescribing and tele-health technologies. He currently provides behavioral health consultations at Shoalwater Bay, Port Gamble S'Klallam and the Skokomish Tribal Community Clinics.
Dr. States has extensive experience working with youth-at-risk as well as adolescents, college age and older populations who have diverse multicultural backgrounds. He provided direct service and consultative behavioral health services at Eastern Washington University, The Benewah Medical Center, the Quinault Indian Nation, and to Fairchild Air force Base. Dr. States has also provided consultation to school and parent organizations on the complex medical and psychological issues of adolescents. He worked with the Alaska Native Medical Center to develop an integrated service model combining primary care, pediatrics, psychiatry, behavioral health and chemical dependency. He designed an multidisciplinary electronic patient health record for the in-patient management of Native American Youth with substance use and mental health disorders at the Healing Lodge of the Seven Nations. He developed an innovative In-patient and Intensive Out Patient treatment program for the multidisciplinary management of adolescents and young adults with anorexia, bulimia nervosa and related disorders. Dr. States co-authored an article on PTSD in the Primary Care Companion, J of Clinical Psychiatry 2003;5(2).
He has presented hundreds of seminars at professional meetings on Mobile Health, Adolescent Medicine and Mountaineering topics. Dr. States is an internationally known climber, successfully ascending routes in South America, the Canadian Rockies, India and Nepal. He summited on the first American ascent of the North Ridge of Nanda Devi (25,645') and was the 17th American to climb Mt. Everest. He integrates his mountaineering experiences into his clinical work and seminar series.
